Every morning, parents send their children off to school with the expectation that they will remain safe.  Across this great Commonwealth, we as educators never need to lose sight of that great responsibility of student safety.

The Kentucky Center for School Safety staff is committed to providing training, resources, information and research. In today's society, school safety is a daily issue that ranges from classroom management to prevention to school incident command for crisis situations. This website is available for planning, training or emergency assistance.

     Kentucky 2008:  Ninth Annual Safe Schools Data Project

This is the ninth annual report produced by the Kentucky Center for School Safety and is cause for celebration. Most importantly, these data show a dramatic reduction over the five-year period under study here in:
    
-Total disciplinary actions for Part I offenses,
    
-Total disciplinary actions for Part II offenses, and
     -Disciplinary actions for the most serious offenses of aggravated assault, arson, larceny/theft
      and burglary.

  • Center for School Safety Issues New Report- WFPL News, Louisville, June 30, 2009
    The Kentucky Center for School Safety has publicly released its latest Safe Schools Data Project Report, which tracks disciplinary action involving the state’s public school students. Center Director Jon Akers says generally speaking, the latest numbers are encouraging.

    So are Kentucky schools safer than they were five years ago? “They are safer today than they ever have been. Are we perfect?  The answer is no,” said [Jon] Akers. “In our society no one is absolutely 100% safe but the schools are better equipped today than they ever have been to handle most anything that can come our way.”
  • Schools Improve Student Behavior- Paducah Sun - June 30, 2009 - Karen McCuiston believes building relationships between students, teachers and staff helps keep schools safe in the region and state.The Kentucky Center for School Safety released data Monday showing a steady decline in disciplinary actions statewide in the past five years and a 34.3 percent decrease in drug abuse incidents from a peak in 2003-04.
NEW LINK!  FREE RESOURCE Operation Respect is a non-profit organization working to assure each child and youth a respectful, safe and compassionate climate of learning where their academic, social and emotional development can take place free of bullying, ridicule and violence. Founded by Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, the organization disseminates educational resources that are designed to establish a climate that reduces the emotional and physical cruelty some children inflict up on each other by behaviors such as ridicule, bullying and-in extreme cases-violence.
         Operation Respect disseminates the DLAM programs free of charge. More than 150,000 copies of the program have been distributed to educators since Operation Respect's inception.

Overview of Healthcare-Associated MRSA  Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. NOMINATIONS are being accepted for the "Steve Kimberling Youth Leadership in School Safety Award".  The Kentucky Center for School Safety and Kentucky School Boards Association would like to acknowledge youth who have taken an innovative leadership role in school safety.  This award will reflect the mission of its namesake, the late Steve Kimberling, who was the catalyst of the Safe School Conference. The Youth Leadership in School Safety Award will be presented at the 15th Annual Safe Schools Conference, October 12-13, 2009 at the Galt House in Louisville.
