For the
last 15 years, the "Safe Schools- Successful
Students" Conference has been sponsored by
Kentucky School Boards Association
(KSBA) and
Kentucky Center for School Safety (KCSS) , in
collaboration with the
Kentucky Department of Education
(KDE),
Office of Drug Control Policy,
Kentucky Center for Instructional Discipline and
Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency
Children (KECSAC).
This
conference brings authorities in
school safety to
present on topics such as sexting, cyberbullying, drugs,
shootings, drinking and natural disasters. Educators
and school boards across the nation continue to look for
inspiration to create tools and plans to improve school
safety, this conference provides an opportunity for
both. |

Highlights of General Sessions |
The Power of Mindsets: Nurturing Motivation,
Self-Discipline and Resilience in Students
Dr. Robert Brooks, Psychologist, Harvard Medical
School
In
his keynote presentation, Dr. Brooks described a
strength-based approach for creating a positive
school climate in which motivation, learning,
self-discipline, caring, and resilience are
reinforced. He described the “mindsets” of
adults who effectively nurture these positive
attributes in students while lessening anger and
bullying.
Specific strategies he highlighted. He is
renowned for the warmth and humor he uses to bring
his insights and anecdotes to life. |

Lessons Learned from School Violence: What Works,
W hat Doesn’t
GeorgeAnn DiCaprio,
This remarkable presentation provided clinical data
coupled with personal testimony of faith, courage,
and determination. Georgeann Rooney DiCaprio,
consultant with the U.S. Department of Education and
a former threat assessment specialist with the U.S.
Secret Service, discussed research findings on 40
school shooting cases and on how school climate
affected whether students with prior knowledge of an
attack (called “bystanders”) came forward with
information about planned school violence

Lessons Learned from School Violence: What Works,
What Doesn’t
Missy
Jenkins Smith,
co-author of,
 I Choose to Be Happy,
and a school shooting survivor, was paralyzed from
her chest down in 1997 when Michael Carneal opened
fire in the Heath High School lobby as she and 34
other students participated in a morning devotional.
Never seeing her disability as an end, Jenkins Smith
presented a message of healing and forgiveness that
encourages school staff and students to improve
their communication with one another.

Ryan’s Story
John Halligan
Halligan
told the riveting and emotional story of his
13-year’old son’s suicide after being bullied and
cyber bullied. The audience received a look inside
of a family that wrestled with strategies to deal
with the bullying. Parents and school staff were
inspired to approach the issue with more insight
gained from this tragic story.
