Vote for School Safety

Safe Schools Week will be October 19-25, 2008

third week of October is set aside as Kentucky Safe Schools Week, we pause to applaud the exemplary efforts of many schools to enhance their school safety and to encourage others across this great Commonwealth to do the same.  In this national election year, many will “choose” to vote for a president as voting is a choice.   On a daily basis, communities, educators, school staffs parents and students make choices that impact the safety of our schools.  To follow this theme, we have entitled Kentucky’s 2008 Safe Schools Week, “Vote for School Safety”.

Kentucky’s educators are working hard to provide the safe, healthy culture and environment necessary for their students to learn because we know that students must feel safe and secure in order to learn at their highest capacity. To further that goal, during this week, KCSS will make a special plea that students, parents, educators, and the community make a commitment to choose to “Vote for School Safety!” Come, join us in this effort!

Kentucky Center for School Safety will sponsor or provide:

  • Statewide Art (Poster) Contest
  • Five days of safety themes
  • Lesson ideas and  classroom activities
  • Community Involvement Activities
  • Safety Handouts on various topics
  • Online Pledge Against School Violence
  • And introducing NEW! Online Pledge against Bullying

“Schools are under extreme pressures to produce and sustain academic growth, which is best accomplished in a safe and healthy learning environment.  While caring educators all across the state are striving to do that, they also recognize that there is still so much more to be done” says Jon Akers, Executive Director of the Kentucky Center for School Safety.  Akers continues by emphasizing that “Safe Schools Week affords us the opportunity to place a renewed focus on awareness, education and prevention as they relate to school safety.”  “To that end,” he says, “School safety is everyone’s responsibility and we, therefore, encourage everyone to “Vote for School Safety”.

Kentucky Safe Schools Week is held in conjunction with America’s Safe Schools Week sponsored by the National School Safety Center.  Each year, several states throughout the nation take this week to heighten awareness of the need for a renewed focus on school safety.
