With the holiday season in the rear view mirror, Kentucky Schools focus on providing a warm culture and climate for both students and staff conductive to high levels of productivity and outstanding academic performance.

The Kentucky Center for School Safety staff is committed to providing training, resources, information and research. In today's society, school safety is a daily issue that ranges from classroom management to school incident command for crisis situations. This website is available for planning, training or emergency assistance.  Let us assist, as your schools plan and practice good school safety procedures.

Just Released... 10th Annual Safe Schools Data Project Report, 2008-09
This is the tenth annual report produced by the Kentucky Center for School Safety and, once again, is cause for celebration. The most significant good news is that a comparison of the data presented here with past reports reveals 10-year lows in the number of expulsions (both with and without services) and corporal punishments for Board Violations, which declined to the lowest levels since we began tracking the data in the current format in 1999-2000.

Grant Funds Available Now!

1) READINESS AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT FOR SCHOOLS (REMS) GRANT  Web site http://www.ed.gov/programs/dvpemergencyresponse/applicant.html .
The application deadline date is February 26, 2010.
Purpose: The REMS grant program provides funds to LEAs to establish an emergency management process that focuses on reviewing and strengthening emergency management plans, within the framework of the four phases of emergency management (Prevention-Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery).
Estimated Average Size of Awards:
• $150,000 for a small-size LEA (1-20 education facilities)
• $300,000 for a medium-size LEA (21-75 education facilities)
• $600,000 for a large-size LEA (76 or more education facilities)
Estimated Number of Awards: 96

2) ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL COUNSELING GRANT

Purpose: The purpose of the Elementary and Secondary School Counseling program is to support efforts by LEAs to establish or expand elementary and secondary school counseling programs.
• Application Deadline Date: February 26, 2010
• Estimated Available Funds: $15,437,591
• Estimated Average Size of Awards: $350,000
• Maximum Award: $400,000 per year (for each year of funding requested)
Estimated Number of Awards: 44

3)  INTEGRATION OF SCHOOLS AND MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEMS PROGRAM GRANT

NASRO Conference  
During this chilly winter weather, plan ahead to summer training. The 20th Annual National Association of School Resource Officers' (NASRO) Conference will be held in Louisville, Aug 2-6, 2010. This year's theme will be

U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Department of Education - May 2008
Major findings include:
• Parents and parental figures greatly influenced whether the bystander reported the information to school staff or other adults in positions of authority.
• Where threats or statements were overt (and may have been overheard by school personnel), students often mistakenly believed that the threats were not serious.
